KISS No. 8 most influential band, according to Kerrang!
- From KISS Kollector, RH -
This weeks issue of UK rock music magazine Kerrang! (cover date November 28, 1998) contains four small pieces on KISS. There's quite a sarcastic piece on Gene Simmon's looks without make-up in the Blackmail Corner. On the U.S. News page Lisa Johnson reports about the rumor of KISS walking a few blocks back to their hotel after the Dodger Stadium show in L.A., due to heavy traffic. They did this in full make-up and outfits, but no one noticed since it was Halloween night.

The main article is called 100 Bands That Changed Your Life! and KISS is listed as No. 8 in this Top 100. This is why, according to Kerrang!: "Image? KISS wrote the book. Certainly, they stole a few ideas from seminal shock-rocker Alice Cooper, but KISS took rock 'n' roll theatre to a level never equalled. In their miaoued pomp prime, these four New Yorkers were no mere rock band: they were larger-than-life super heroes with fanciful alter-egos; the Starchild, the Demon, Space Ace and, er, the Cat. Rarely photographed out of make-up, KISS had a mystique which, allied to the catchiest bubble gum metal of the era, made them irresistible to American teens. Just about every U.S. rock band of the past years (Nirvana, The Smashing Pumpkins et al) grew up on KISS records — and what great records they were. Inspired by The Beatles, KISS had a flair for melody exemplified by such chest-beating anthems as Detroit Rock City and God Of Thunder, not forgetting the brilliant, high-camp disco stomper I Was Made For Lovin' You." The album Kerrang! recommends is Alive II.

In the Culture section, the We Are One limited edition CD single and video is reviewed: "Back in tack, the cosmetic-drenched New York deafeners return with a suitably preposterous package that includes both a 3-D promo video for the title track of their last album and a bonus 4-track CD. Masochistic members of the glam fraternity will slaver with delight as Gene Simmons' tongue lolls from the screens in three delicious dimensions during the vid, while the CD features two versions of We Are One, a power-stomping ballad, plus Psycho Circus and In Yer Face. Nice explosions though." The video package is rated 3 out of 5.

KISS shows in Boston highest grossing concerts
- From KISS Kollector, JvP -
According to Amusement Business' Boxscore Top 10 Concert Grosses as published by Billboard Music Group (see Billboard's November 28 issue), the two KISS shows at the FleetCenter in Boston (November 12 and 13) made KISS the highest grossing act during the last three weeks or so. The gross was $972.840 while the attendance of the two shows was 19.720 (capacity for these two shows: 25.000). Other acts in the Top 10 include Phish, Shania Twain and Neil Diamond.

KISS makes the call
- From KISSONLINE -
Before the show at Madison Square Garden each member of KISS recorded a penalty call video that will be used during hockey games at the Garden. Presently the Garden plays a video of former New York mayor Ed Koch making a penalty call. But soon you should be able to see Gene, Paul, Ace and Peter!

Everything 3-D with KISS these days
- From KISS Kollector, JvP -
You probably didn't know yet, but if you look at any of the recent KISS releases while you're wearing the 3-D glasses from the limited edition Psycho Circus 3-D video you'll see that it's all in 3-D! Check out the cover of the video package and you will see for yourself that particularly the lettering of the song titles We Are One and Psycho Circus leans over, while there's a lot of depth in the rest of the artwork. And when looking at the cover of either the Psycho Circus or the We Are One CD singles with your 3-D glasses on, the curtains almost seem to be real! Whereas the red around the four KISS faces seems to be right in your face resembling bloodstains. And even when looking at the cover of the Dodger Stadium tour book with the 3-D glasses on, you'll discover some extra depth in the artwork.

Nieuwe Revu magazine's KISS article out now
- From KISS Kollector, JvP -
Click here for more pictures The issue of Dutch weekly magazine Nieuwe Revu featuring a six page KISS article (a story on the recent KISS Kollector Fanclub trip to the Los Angeles Halloween concert plus an interview with Gene) is available as of today.

The cover features a small photo of Gene during the Halloween show plus the line: 'Totally and completely addicted to KISS.' Inside the article kicks off with a two page spread of Gene live at Dodger Stadium and the heading: 'Longing for KISS', followed by this introduction: 'The old KISS has been together again for a little while now. Reporter Bram de Graaf went to Los Angeles with a group of excited Dutch super fans, attended a concert and talked to front man Gene Simmons. "We are like cockroaches, we outlive everybody." Photography: Klaas Jan van der Weij.'

The article consists of a few pages on the fanclub trip and the KISS fans plus an interview with Gene that was conducted the day after the Halloween concert. Here's one of Gene's answers taken from the interview: "KISS fans are the best always because it's the highest expectations. But most fans don't fly in from Holland and spend thousands of dollars just to be there. We don't have to please just the general fans, we have to please the crème de la crème of the fans and those are the KISS fans. And they tell us the truth. Millions of people will say: that's the best show in the world. They won't. They will say: It wasn't bad, but you can do a lot better. They want the best of the best and they deserve it, so we will work towards that." Click here to view some of the pictures from the magazine.

Another interesting day in KISStory
- From KISS Kollector, RH -
Today is another noteworthy day in KISStory. Last night, during the Madison Square Garden show, KISS received their gold album awards for Psycho Circus, which went gold one month ago. Today, on the seventh anniversary of Eric Carr's untimely death, two KISS videos were released in the United States. The long-awaited new home video The Second Coming became available and 1996's MTV Unplugged video was released on Digital Versatile Disc. This is the first KISS release in the new DVD format. The first fan reports indicate that The Second Coming is absolutely wonderful, a 'must-have'. The new video package documents the 1996 reunion ad what followed, right up to the Psycho Circus photo shoot. It contains two tapes and a 36-page booklet, the size of two video cassettes.

KISS warns crowd about lasers
- From USA Today -
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Members of the rock group KISS gave a tongue-lashing to the crowd after someone shined a laser pointer in drummer Peter Criss' eyes. Criss finished singing the ballad Beth at the Continental Airlines Arena on Nov. 22 and then nearly stormed off the stage, furious that someone was blinding him with one of the hand-held electronic devices. He rushed to the side of the stage, grabbed a microphone and screamed a profanity at the responsible party. Lead singer Paul Stanley challenged whoever was shining the beam at band members to fight him on stage. "In every crowd, there's one or two people who don't belong here," he said. "Now I know you want to bring it to school tomorrow when you go to sixth grade, but leave it at home when you go to the show."

KISS were made for loving MSG baby
The kings of theatre-rock kick out the jams in Manhattan
- From Jam! -
NEW YORK, N.Y. — If it's too loud, you're too old! KISS might be old, but not old enough to stop playing loud. KISS brought their rock juggernaut to their hometown of New York City to play in front of a sold out crowd at Madison Square Garden Monday night. The tour, billed The Psycho Circus World Tour, is in support of KISS' new album, Psycho Circus, the first album the original members have recorded in almost 20 years.

Setting a carnival mood with many audience members masked in KISS-like make-up, the band opened up with the title track from Psycho Circus, and without missing a beat, moved right into Shout It Out Loud. Aside from the new album, KISS performed songs recorded from 1974-78, like King of the Nite Time World, Calling Dr. Love and the rarely performed Makin' Love.

Paul Stanley worked the crowd with his flamboyant style and gyrating antics that would make a Vegas show girl blush. Gene Simmons played his role of the mean demon, stalking about the stage with his axe-shaped bass base guitar. And Ace Frehley was typical Ace, looking subdued and unresponsive to the craziness around him. The stage was big and busy even by KISS standards, with enough pyro, smoke and flames to supply a small country's military. With a new concept in viewing a concert, each fan was given 3D glasses for viewing three dimensional screens of the concert. The screens showed Frehley and Stanley poking their guitars at the audience and Simmons making faces, bringing the band closer to the audience.

During the song Love Gun, Stanley was taken from the main stage via a cable rig to a smaller stage in the center of the arena to be closer to the audience. "I've always dreamed of being up here on stage playing for a crowd. You guys have made that dream become real. Since all you guys can't come up here. I'll just have to come to you," Stanley told the audience before being lifted through the air. Simmons is still doing his trademark antics like flying through the arena spitting stage blood and shooting flames to the rafters — a trick he performs by filling his mouth with kerosene and spitting at a torch.

But with all the glitz and frills, the music is still important, and KISS did not disappoint. Their show was well rehearsed and went off without a missed cue or wrong note. Their encores were Beth, a ballad sung by drummer, Peter Criss, Detroit Rock City and the powerful Black Diamond. Before the encore, the band members were each presented with their 30th gold record for the sales of their new album. KISS certainly is still alive, ad no doubt will be rocking into the millennium.

HARD ROCK CAFE TO ACQUIRE THE FIRST-EVER RELEASED KISS COSTUMES
Straight off their sweaty bodies following the Halloween Psycho Circus World Tour performance in Los Angeles

ORLANDO, Fla. — October 30, 1998 — When the four members of KISS get off stage after performing in Los Angeles on Halloween night to kick off their Psycho Circus World Tour, they won't be sending their costumes off to the cleaners — but rather stripping them off for Hard Rock Cafe. The acquisition by Hard Rock Cafe will mark the first-ever-released KISS costumes since the band formed in 1973. Hard Rock will add a costume and signed instrument from each band member (Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss) into its 52,000-piece rock 'n' roll memorabilia collection — the largest of its kind in the world. Valued at more than $20 million, Hard Rock's memorabilia collection was dubbed the "Smithsonian of Rock 'n' Roll" by pop culture icon Andy Warhol.

"This is a special opportunity to own a rare piece of rock 'n' roll history," said Teri Simpson, Director of Memorabilia, Design & Display for Hard Rock Cafe International, Inc. "It's a great investment and addition to our collection, and luckily there won't be any extra charges for the sweat and make-up stains on the costumes." The only other authentic KISS costume owned outside of the band, is one from Gene Simmons rumored to have been stolen while he was on a movie set. With band knowledge, the costume is also in the Hard Rock collection and currently displayed at Hard Rock Cafe Washington D.C.

KISS, it appears, will never die
The band's Psycho Circus arrives this week in New York
- From Newsday -
In pop music, there are geniuses and there are journeymen. There are living legends and there are one-hit wonders. There are heartthrobs, clowns and crooners. And then there are the cockroaches — the bands that keep crawling back no matter how ridiculous, repetitive and washed-up they might seem.

They're in search of the spotlight, after the cash. Among the cockroaches, KISS is king. And the band is happy with its crown. "I like to think of us as cockroaches," says KISS bassist Gene Simmons. "It doesn't matter if you like us or not. We will outlive you all."

Two years ago, KISS celebrated its 25th year in rock by reforming with its original members — Simmons, singer-guitarist Paul Stanley, guitarist Ace Frehley and drummer Peter Criss — reapplying its long-abandoned make-up and staging one of the most extravagant and successful tours in rock. This weekend and next, KISS hits three area stadiums (including Nassau Coliseum) with its follow-up tour: the KISS Psycho Circus, a concert that touts itself as being the first live rock show to be presented in 3-D.

Audience members at the Psycho Circus will be encouraged to don 3-D glasses and watch the band's fire breathing, blood-spewing antics on what Simmons called "gi-normous" monitors flanking the stage. It's all part of the hype that KISS has become famous for. No gimmick or gewgaw is too trashy for these masters of mega-rock. In its second incarnation, the band has lent its name to a 900 number, a web site, a KISS car, comic books, a forthcoming KISS movie and even KISS toilet paper.

Simmons — the one in the dragon make-up — is the first to admit that this isn't about art, it's about spectacle. "I believe artists should be less artists and more entertainers, and be servers of the people," says Simmons over the telephone, chomping noisily on a breakfast of eggs and toast. "And that's my job, to make you forget about the traffic jam and whatever ails you. To that end, we spend millions of dollars, putting our money where our mouth is. This is the first live 3-D tour in history. My tongue will reach you right under your chin wherever you are."

Simmons is the band's most recognizable member. He's the one who spits fire and blood. He's the one with the tongue long rumored to have been lengthened with part of a cow's tongue. He's the egomaniac who asks reporters to send all stories to his personal P.O. box because he loves to see his name in print.

In short, Simmons loves being a star. The anti-fame posings of grunge icons such as Kurt Cobain and Eddie Vedder annoyed him deeply. They probably also created the vacuum in which aging glitter rockers like KISS could still survive. "We've always believed in dressing up," Simmons says. "I'm sick of looking at bands on stage being dressed up like Domino's pizza delivery boys. I would rather be in KISS than any band on Earth. Because, think about it, if you were in a serious band you couldn't have any fun."

At this point, KISS' cartoon image has been around so long that it's no longer shocking. Everyone can see it's just an act. That means KISS now gets to play with Dick Clark on New Year's Eve while Marilyn Manson — who stole all he could from KISS, David Bowie and Alice Cooper — still suffers the slings and arrows of the religious right, the same Bible-thumpers who used to protest against KISS. Simmons says Manson gets picked on because he's "the new monster" while KISS has reached untouchable star status. "Fame brings its own cachet," Simmons says. "Which is close to cash."

One month of KISS Kollector Online
- From KISS Kollector, RH -
One month ago today, on October 20, the new KISS Kollector web site opened right here. Since then almost 4,300 people visited KISS Kollector Online (not counting reloads), which gives us great pleasure. More than 1,000 hits a week is not bad for a brand new web site. Of course we hope to do even better in the near future. You can help us by telling fellow music fans about KISS Kollector Online or even linking to us, if you happen to maintain your own web site. We'd like to thank everybody for their support and please keep coming back... KISS Kollector Online is here to stay!

Future of PolyGram/Universal starts to shape up
- From KISS Kollector, JvP -
On December 4, 1998, Seagram will officially take over KISS' record company PolyGram from Dutch electronics giant Philips. Seagram, based in Canada, already owns Universal (including MCA Records). As KISS Kollector Online already reported when parties involved were still negotiating the $10,4 billion deal, PolyGram/Universal will continue under the name Universal Music Group and the newly formed company is expected to acquire a 25% market share worldwide.

As a result of the merger, thousands of jobs will be on the line, which will affect labels such as KISS' label Mercury Records. Many other labels, including A&M, Geffen and Island, have to prepare a downsizing. Insiders think that 20% of the personnel could loose their job, which is over 3.000 jobs in all. PolyGram-MD Theo Roos will continue to head PolyGram (or Universal Music Group) in Holland.

Last week the Los Angeles Times reported that in the USA, Universal Music Group will be split into four label groups: two on the West Coast (Interscope Records and MCA Group), and two on the East Coast (Universal Records and the combined Island-Mercury Records). These four units are expected to each be the home of 100 acts, with minimum sales of $200 million a year. Outside the States, U.M.G. will rest on the structure of PolyGram.

In the USA, the future of Mercury Records Group chairman/CEO Danny Goldberg, to name but one, is still unknown. The Mercury Records Group (Mercury and Island) will be headed by Jim Caparro, currently president of PolyGram Group Distribution.

Media opinion on new KISS tour seems quite positive
- From KISS Kollector, JvP -
So far the media in the USA seem to have embraced the start of the Psycho Circus World Tour 1998-1999 in quite a positive way. "Spectacle", "endless party", "showmanship" and "spectacular escape valve" are only some of the terms the media have used to describe a Psycho Circus show. It seems like the critics are more positive this time than some of the die-hards who have been criticising the opening show at Dodgers Stadium last month. While some fans were a bit disappointed with the Psycho Circus side show acts (already been cancelled at the indoors shows, apparently due to logistics troubles) or the set list (reportedly it has seen some slight changes already), the press seem to be very much impressed and some even stated KISS sounded much tighter than on the last tour.

When announcing the Psycho Circus World Tour 1998-1999, the band told fans they would not have bands touring with them as support acts but have side show circus acts instead. Now that the tour went underway the side show freaks seem to be out (but might return later on the tour), and opening band Econoline Crush is in — not to the liking of the KISS Army however, who have been caught booing KISS' support act and giving them the finger. The Vancouver band already opened for some shows on the last tour, so they should have known better...

Details on the UNION live album from Bruce
- From Bruce Kulick -
First off the live record is finished and we are working on artwork et cetera now. For all of you that saw us you will want this, for those who missed us you will able to hear what we sounded like on the past tour. The bonus tracks are the Beatles' song Hide Your Love Way and an acoustic October Morning Wind. The songs include many UNION tracks but of course showcase Jungle, Power To The Music, I Walk Alone, Surrender (Cheap Trick) and Man In The Moon by the Scream. It will be out early next year and I think you will all love it.

Is it odd for a band that has only put out one disc to do a live record??? Not in my book. The set list is so full of great material I feel it is the ultimate way to get the UNION experience of our evolution as a band. We are still growing and getting to know our potential. But we are proud of the gigs we played and thank you for those who supported us. John and I will be going to Australia to do shows there with Eric Singer and we will as well promote UNION and perform some songs from our CD. We hope to have the band go there early next year. More later and see ya New Years Eve??? Coconut Teaser!!!
